Kathmandu, March 14: The Gender Responsive Journalism Award was conferred on two journalists today amidst a function held on the occasion of International Women’s Day, 2016 in the capital city.
Minister for Information and Communications, Sherdhan Rai, conferred the awards on journalist Saindra Rai based in Kathmandu and photo journalist Manoj Poudel of Kapilvastu. The Award carrying a purse of Rs 25,000 each is set up by Media Advocacy Group (MAG) and UN Women.
Rai’s story in Nepali, ‘Garikhane Lai Jhanai Sasti’ (More tribulation to those wanting to earn sincere living), and published in Himal Khabar newspaper on December 20 and a photo published in Kantipur daily on September 21 last year were given the awards, the organization said.
On the occasion, Minister Rai said the new constitution was woman-friendly and that it guaranteed rights and opportunities for women. It is an achievement that a woman’s leadership perches on the country’s highest post, Minister Rai said, reiterating that the constitution assured the rights of all classes, castes and communities.
Minister Rai also spoke on the preparations afoot to draft a new media policy and pledged utmost efforts to make it gender-friendly. RSS
