Kathmandu, March 16: Minister for Population and Environment Bishwendra Paswan has said that people’s access to energy should be ensured for Nepal’s graduation to a developing country.

Addressing a workshop on ‘Best Practices and Business Opportunities for Energy Access Financing’ organised by the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre, Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other partner agencies here Wednesday, Minister Paswan said that collective commitment and activeness would help end country’s energy crisis in a short span of time. “The government has introduced the concept of ‘sustainable energy for all’ to ensure people’s access to energy by 2030. The government is active for the same as energy is the main basis of development,” Paswan said.

Minister Paswan also appealed to the donor agencies and financial institutions for investment in the Nepal’s energy sector.

Also speaking at the programme, National Planning Commission (NPC) Vice Chairman Dr Yubraj Khatiwada said that the government was committed to the expansion of the energy needed in the country.

Saying that the banks and financial institutions were willing to invest in clean energy, Khatiwada added that people should have the access to energy in order to achieve the target of sustainable development.

On the occasion, Australian Ambassador to Nepal Glenn White said that renewable energy could be a reliable and sustainable alterative to provide local’s access to energy.

Likewise, Executive Director of the Centre, Ram Prasad Dhital, shared that different projects were completed with support from the central renewable energy fund established with the investment of Nepal government and donor agencies.

The two-day workshop will review the success factors of renewable energy financing within and outside Asia and the Pacific, and share knowledge on the development of viable and innovative refinancing models that can be deployed. RSS
